Copyright: Gerard van Kempen Pre-fabricated tea roofs lie in a meadow in Las Manchas. These roofs were probably made more than 50 years ago when felling the Canarian Pine trees was permitted. The tea (resin-rich core wood) is very, very long lasting (100 years or more) and was used for building. The roofs were made to standard sizes in the carpenters yard and transported to the house.

Concidence? Gerard took this photograph while waiting for their plane home, his wife Helen is at the first table. He unknowingly also snapped friends of ours. That's the two people (in red) at the third table. Mieke spent part of the year in The Netherlands and the rest of the time on La Palma. Hans is the Dutch owner of Bungalows Sonvida in Todoque

At 2426m above sea level it can be cold, even freezing in the heart of winter. On this day it was just a few degrees above freezing, there was a biting wind and the clouds were swirling around the Roque and the telescopes. Gerard and Helen (Lelystad, Netherlands) had been forewarned and were well wrapped but didn't stay too long ;-)
About half a kilometer down the road the sun was shining and the jackets came off again.
The rest of the island had bright sunshine all day.
