The main shopping street of Santa Cruz is narrow, cobbled and traffic free and runs parallel to the main road along coast. At the northern end is a local market, a castle/fort and a replica of the Santa Maria ship.
At the Southern end is the harbour and a small beach. In the town are many historic buildings and museums, as well as small plazas with cafes, bars and restaurants.
In 2007 a ring road was completed behind the town passing through a series of tunnels.
