Pre-fabricated tea roofs lie in a meadow in Las Manchas. These roofs were probably made more than 50 years ago when felling the Canarian Pine trees was permitted. The tea (resin-rich core wood) is very, very long lasting (100 years or more) and was used for building. The roofs were made to standard sizes in the carpenters yard and transported to the house.

Typical roof construction on a restored house in Tijarafe. The half-round tiles are the modern equivalent of the hand made tiles often seen on older buildings. They used to be made from local clay and formed on the thigh. Piles of the tiles were then covered in brushwood and the tiles baked in the resulting ash.
The new versions are machine made and imported.
